Job Description

Job Title: Art Director

Location: New York, NY 10036 (Hybrid – 3 days onsite)

Contract: 6 Months (Mid-September Start – No Extension)

Pay Range: $80–$90/hr.

Responsibilities

Collaborate closely with editors to visually bring complex financial, business, political, and news stories to life.
Design for digital-first platforms while also handling print when needed.
Create, commission, and art direct illustrations, leveraging your network of artists and identifying fresh, emerging talent.
Develop compelling data visualizations and graphics to explain complex concepts clearly.
Maintain strong visual and typographical hierarchy across projects.
Manage multiple tight deadlines, from hourly to weekly deliverables, in a fast-paced newsroom.

Qualifications

5+ years in an editorial or newsroom design role.
Extensive newsroom experience — no junior-level candidates.
Background in publication design departments
Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud .
Experience with HTML, CSS , and other web languages for data visualization.
Comfortable working in a digital CMS (WordPress preferred).
Familiarity with Figma and print-related CMS platforms (Methode a plus).
Excellent communication skills, journalistic judgment, and editorial integrity.
