Director of Campus Emergency Preparedness and Response

Location: Austin, Texas

We are seeking a highly skilled and proactive Director of Campus Emergency Preparedness and Response to lead and enhance our campus safety operations. This role is responsible for overseeing emergency preparedness planning, response coordination, and the day-to-day management of an outsourced security team. The Director will ensure that security measures align with best practices, compliance requirements, and the evolving needs of the campus community.

This position requires demonstrated leadership experience in a comparable role. Candidates must have successfully served as the primary lead for emergency preparedness and response—not merely as a team member, deputy, or second-in-command.

A performance task will be required during the selection process to demonstrate the required level of experience, planning and communication skills.

This is a 100% Austin-based position . While there may be occasional flexibility to work remotely, the role is fundamentally on-site. Standard operating hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but certain trainings, drills, or supervisory responsibilities may require work during early mornings, evenings, or weekends.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Security Oversight

  • Serve as the primary liaison with the outsourced security provider, ensuring effective staffing, training, and performance management of security officers assigned to campus.
  • Establish clear expectations, workflows, and reporting structures for the security team to maintain a safe and secure environment.
  • Conduct regular security audits, risk assessments, and vulnerability analyses to identify areas for improvement.
  • Develop relationships with local law enforcement, emergency responders, and relevant agencies to enhance security coordination and emergency response capabilities.

Emergency Preparedness & Response

  • Develop, implement, and regularly update the Campus Emergency Operations Plan
  • to ensure preparedness for a range of potential threats, including natural disasters, active threats, and other emergencies.
  • Lead emergency response efforts, including decision-making on campus closures, shelter-in-place directives, evacuations, and severe weather response.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute campus-wide emergency drills, tabletop exercises, and training sessions for staff
  • and security personnel.
  • Maintain and enhance emergency communication protocols, ensuring the rapid dissemination of critical information to the campus community.
  • Oversee the implementation and testing of emergency notification systems.

Policy & Compliance

  • Develop and enforce campus security policies and procedures that align with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws regarding campus safety and emergency management.
  • Regularly review and refine security manuals, emergency action plans, and response protocols.

Desirable candidates will have a range of prior experience and capabilities to include:

  • 5+ years of experience in security management, emergency preparedness, or a related field, preferably in an educational or campus setting.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing security personnel, including contract oversight and performance evaluation.
  • Strong knowledge of emergency response planning, crisis management, and security risk assessment best practices.
  • Experience conducting emergency drills, training sessions, and security audits to ensure campus readiness.
  • Familiarity with emergency communication systems, such as mass notification platforms.
  • Ability to remain calm and make critical decisions under pressure in high-stakes situations.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $135,000 to $150,000
  • Compensation for the role will depend on several factors, including but not limited, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience. Internal pay equity also factors into evaluating compensation.
