Job Description

Mastagni Holstedt, A.P.C. seeks a Labor Relations Consultant to join its growing Labor and Employment Department in the Sacramento office. Labor Consultants are responsible for providing labor relations services to clients including but not limited to; contract negotiations and administration, grievance handling, disciplinary actions, dispute resolution, association governance and management, and client training.

Since 1976, Mastagni Holstedt, A.P.C., has been assisting police officers, firefighters, other safety workers, and public employees in matters ranging from internal discipline and criminal defense, to wage and hour, disability, and workers’ compensation claims. Our law firm also represents public employee unions and labor associations in collective bargaining contract negotiations and other labor relations matters.

Typical Tasks:

  • Serve as Chief Negotiator or Advisor of a negotiating committee;
  • Develop negotiating proposals and write contract language;
  • Research, analyze, and cost association and employer proposals;
  • Present or assist in presenting cases in mediation, arbitration, and/or fact-finding;
  • Develop and maintain communication with management and other labor representatives;
  • Function as Chief Negotiator for policy adoption and other meet and confer matters;
  • 24/7 availability; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

The knowledge and abilities required to perform this function are normally acquired through training and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited four year college or university, plus at least one year of progressively responsible experience in the field or labor relations as a labor representative.

Applicants must possess a valid California driver's license as a considerable amount of travel throughout California is required.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles of labor relations;
  • Principles of collective bargaining
  • Laws relating to labor relations with an emphasis on California public sector laws, regulations, and court
  • decisions;
  • Principles of organization and management;
  • Research and data collection techniques;
  • Communications techniques for gathering, evaluating, and transmitting information;
  • Methods of dispute resolution;
  • Grievance procedures; and
  • Current labor relations practices, trends, and major issues in the public sector.

Ability to:

  • Successfully negotiate a labor agreement;
  • Initiate, plan, and complete assigned duties with a minimum amount of supervision;
  • Perform research, analysis, and evaluation of facts and conflicting evidence;
  • Reason logically and reach sound conclusions;
  • Acquire higher level labor relations skills;
  • Communicate effectively through clear and concise written correspondence and oral presentations;
  • Analyze and cost complex negotiating proposals and develop alternatives within general limits;
  • Establish working relationships with various labor organizations and management staff; and
  • Assert and justify recommendations.
