Executive Director – Public Library District | Austin, TX

A well-established public library district in the greater Austin area is seeking a forward-thinking, mission-driven Executive Director to lead with vision, integrity, and passion for community impact. With a dedicated team, engaged patrons, and strong community support, this library is poised for its next exciting chapter under the guidance of a collaborative and experienced leader.

This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of an essential civic institution in one of Texas’s most vibrant regions. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Trustees and oversee all aspects of library operations, strategic planning, staff development, community engagement, and financial stewardship.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall strategic and operational leadership to ensure high-quality services, resources, and programming aligned with community needs.
  • Guide long-term planning, budget management, policy development, and service evaluation in accordance with the library's mission.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop staff while fostering a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Act as a primary liaison to the Library Board of Trustees, keeping them informed and engaged in governance, policy, and strategic initiatives.
  • Build strong partnerships with civic, educational, and nonprofit organizations to expand community impact.
  • Oversee facilities and technology infrastructure, ensuring safe, modern, and welcoming environments.
  • Lead efforts in funding development, including grant applications, fundraising strategies, and cultivating donor and stakeholder relationships.
  • Advocate for the library at local, state, and national levels, representing its interests and staying abreast of industry trends and legislative updates.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program required
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership experience in a public library setting strongly preferred
  • Proven experience in staff supervision, budget oversight, and organizational planning
  • Deep understanding of public library operations, evolving technologies, and community outreach
  • Skilled in communication, leadership, and relationship-building with diverse stakeholders
  • Experience engaging with library boards or advisory committees
  • Familiarity with Texas library governance and state reporting practices a plus
