Position Title: Web Developer (Alt Text Focused)

Position Summary

Our client is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Web Developer to enhance the accessibility of their Shopify-based e-commerce platform. This short-term role is focused on optimizing product images through the creation and implementation of clear, descriptive alt text that complies with accessibility standards. The ideal candidate will possess a strong grasp of Shopify customization, excellent written communication skills, and a passion for inclusivity and digital accessibility.

Location: Remote

Employment Type: Contract (3 Weeks)

Start Date: 5/4/2025

Hours per Week: 30–50 hours (flexible- no need to work standard 8-5, but must be available for occasional meetings)

Pay Rate: $35-$45/hr

Essential Job Functions

• Review and analyze product images in Shopify to identify missing or incomplete alt text.
• Develop concise, effective alt text following WCAG guidelines.
• Create descriptions that include both the product name and a brief visual overview (e.g., size, color, features).
• Collaborate with content and web teams to ensure brand-aligned messaging.
• Test and verify image accessibility across screen readers and assistive technologies.
• Use Shopify’s backend or third-party tools to streamline alt text implementation.
• Stay informed on evolving web accessibility standards and recommend improvements.

Job Qualifications

• Proven experience with Shopify (customization and backend operations).
• Familiarity with WCAG 2.0/2.1 web accessibility standards.
• Strong attention to detail and excellent written communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively across teams.
• Understanding of SEO principles, especially regarding alt text.
• Experience with HTML, CSS, and image optimization preferred.
• Passion for digital accessibility and inclusive design.

Preferred Skills and Competencies

• Background in e-commerce or online retail.
• Familiarity with assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers).
• Basic visual design skills for product description and assessment.
